Security issue: renaming a pc changes it's group

I noticed the following behavior with SH 5.5.8:

  • Add a remote access Linux PC to a group in SH admin console
  • Rename said PC with hostnamectl set-hostname new-name.local
  • Restart PC (or restart simplegateway service)
  • PC now has lost it’s group membership (and thus it’s filters, possiblity rendering it accessible to non authorized users)

Renaming a remote access Windows PC doesn’t move it’s group memebership.

Tests done with AlmaLinux 9.5 x64 and Windows 10 x64.

If it’s important that Technicians should never see unintended machines, you should set up your Technician’s filters to hide machines by default and only show machines and groups you designate, see: https://simple-help.com/filtering-guide

When you instead have machine visibility filters configured to show machines by default and only hide groups you’ve specified, Technicians could be able to see ungrouped machines, machines in misspelled groups, or newly created groups that are yet to be filtered.
